Sheet masks have been a staple of Asian women’s beauty routines since, forever, but it’s only been a couple of years since everyone stopped seeing masking as a once-in-a-blue-moon treatment and started slapping it on their faces on a daily basis. It’s like we’ve finally been given free rein to use our ‘special stash’ every day and splash out on more than 365 masks a year.

LC and Whitney Port

So before the Korean beauty wave came along and we started schlepping to Seoul to fill up our luggage allowances with masks on the cheap, there were Taiwanese masks. And when I say Taiwanese masks, I really mean My Scheming and not the other more known and overrated brand with too much fragrance. Before we had hydrogels and bio-cellulose masks, My Scheming was what I shopped in bulk for because

  • It’s super affordable
  • It’s of better quality than cotton masks by The Face Shop/Innisfree/Skin Food
  • It’s effective
  • It didn’t irritate my skin

I’m no longer crazy in love with My Scheming masks, but that’s more me transiting out of the budget + drugstore category to budget + premium cool table (*flips hair*) rather than a drop in quality. I don’t get excited by it, but when I don’t have a specific mask I want to try or if I’m feeling particularly uninspired, my remaining stash of My Scheming masks is what I reach out for.

Over 7 years, I’ve tried out pretty much every My Scheming mask, save for limited edition/regional ‘flavours’ and only recently did I start documenting them all. I have five favourites that I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a 10-pc box of, while the rest are purchased as individual pieces. My top absolute favourite is:

My Scheming Masks Bird Nest Collagen Hydrating Mask

My Scheming Bird’s Nest Collagen Hydrating Mask.

It was the first My Scheming mask I’ve ever tried and made me fall in love with the brand – what was a random pick up in a Hong Kong drugstore has blossomed into a full-on love affair, and I’ve probably gone through about 10 boxes of these in years. It’s ultra brightening, hydrating, and plumping without irritating your skin.

I haven’t seen it in the new silk format yet, but honestly I find that the regular cotton version for this is just as effective and good.

How to pick your My Scheming masks and where to buy them

Before I unleash the star-filled table of a simplified review system of all 33 masks below, here are some tips on buying My Scheming masks because while the brand has helpfully incorporate a bit of English into their packaging, some of the pertinent information is left in Mandarin. Also, their website sucks is very outdated.

Tip 1: SILK VS COTTON

My Scheming Masks Sakura Silk IconI really love their new ‘Invisible’ material, simply because it’s more comfortable and adheres better to the skin. I also find that the silk ones are less prone to dripping – because holy crap, these pack a whole lot of serum in. The cotton ones don’t really drip, but there are a few exceptions, while I’ve never experienced dripping with the thinner material. May I just add that for the first time in a long time, I tried one of the beloved masks from the other Taiwanese brand and not only was the material rough, most of the serum ended up on my bedsheets instead of my face.

To easily tell if the masks are made with silk or cotton sheets, that top-right happy face icon is all you need.

Tip 2: SHOP AROUND

I live in Singapore, and we are pretty much acclimatized to grisly markups from imported products. If you are in SG as well, you can pick up the very basic and bestselling ‘flavours’ at Venus Beauty, both online and in stores for about $10 per box of ten, before shipping. Sasa stores stock an assortment of masks, from $14 – $17 per box. Sasa’s online store always seems to be out of stock of My Scheming, so I’ve pretty much stopped trying. Outside of stocking up in Taiwan – where you get the newest and limited ‘flavours’ in individual pieces – my favourite place to get these is BGO.

It’s a Taiwanese online beauty store, and most of the masks cost about NT199, which is about S$9. EMS Shipping is free above NT2,800 or S$120. Yes, the downside is that you have to buy in bulk/share but you also get almost all of the ‘flavours’ that are not as easily found elsewhere.

Reliable, cheap, and effective. That’s why after so many years, I still keep a stash of these even when newer, younger and cooler masks keep forcing me to cheat. I’ve got a bunch of one night stands, and more than a few The Ones I’m very happy with. What’s a girl to do? *languid sigh*

Do you like My Scheming masks? What’s your favourite?

  1. I love your reviews! And now I’m super curious to try them 🙂 But I can’t find them on BGO? I tried with google translate, but no luck. Do you have the link directly to the masks? <3

    • Hi! The cotton ones will usually go for $199 on promotions, they have them quite frequently. I bought the silk ones at 299 (full price).

  2. Thanks for this awesome review! I’ve recently jumped on the My Scheming bandwagon and am always looking to try out more. You mentioned the bird’s nest mask (which I love) and was wondering what your other 4 favourite masks were. Thanks!

      • Thanks so much for replying back <3 thanks I'll give it a try hopefully it works cause i used too much money on masks with no results 🙂
