For a while now, my HG Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner (I say HG, because I’ve been using and repurchasing the same one for at least three years) has been… bugging out on me. I’ve tried adding eye primer, taking out my primer, eye cream, base… everything you can think of, but whatever I do, my once perfect single-swipe-done cateye enabler starts flaking away the moment I’m done. Maybe it’s my aging eyelids (nooooo!) or there was a reformulation… It was a clear sign to say goodbye.
So I started to hunt for a new HG. FYI, I have Asian eyes, Asian lids, Asian skin, and live in a tropical city in Asia. Liquid eyeliners can be said to be the be-all and end-all of most daily makeup regimes here, because a) eyeshadows don’t last in our year round 32 degree heat and b) ain’t nobody got time for dat blending shiz in the morning.
Anyways, I did my research, homework, and colour me surprised, the liquid eyeliner getting great, HG-level reviews consistently across different sites was by Kat Von D, my high school crush. Back in the day, I loved watching Miami Ink, then LA Ink, into the wee hours instead of studying, because that’s what students about to take life-changing exams do. I’ve never been keen on her beauty line though, partly because it was so hard to purchase (Sephora US only) and mostly because I have grown out of gothic Old English letters and silver stars on my makeup.
But yet at the same time, like the body concealer designed to cover up tattoos, it made total sense that she would do a great eyeliner. Her liner game is crazy strong. Look at her ~*~*~~*
So I got three of the Tattoo Liner in Trooper (black, two pieces) and Mad Max (chocolate brown). A little excessive? Not when I’m paying eighty goddamned dollars for shipping. Obviously, from my title you can tell that I love it, but here’s why.
KAT VON D TATTOO LINER REVIEW
Big boo. Only available on Sephora US site, UK based Rose’s Beauty Store (at a mark up) and eBay. (Update: It’s now available in Sephora SG!!!)
The silver stars actually grew on me after a while. The pen itself is sleek and reassuringly weighty, with a sort of seal cap that draws the tip in securely to minimise ink stains and leaks. I haven’t got ink stains on my fingers since using this. USD19 for 0.55ml.
No clicking or tapping away needed. Right from the get go, the pen tip releases just enough ink to slide along your waterline or eyelid with ease. Shitty liners can sometimes release excess ink – which is not only a waste but a bafflingly stupid design overlook – so this is great.
You know how you just have an idea of how things should work, but there’s always one or two things off about them? Well, this liner just works the way I want an eyeliner to. The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner dries instantly, does not smudge into my crease, has a tip sharp enough to finish off the tail, is black enough so I don’t have to keep layering, and lasts all day without cracking or going everywhere. It just works.
I’ve always had trouble with my eyeliner due to asymmetrical eyelids, and on a bad day, can spend up to 10 minutes in the morning trying to get my eyes to look less lopsided. The fuss-free application of this has cut it down to say, 2 minutes, because it’s so much easier to get the look right and there’s less room for error with the precise lining.
I’ve swatched it below with my former HG Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner, and the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner is a lot glossier and darker. Unfortunately, the fuzzy bit near the tail was due to me leaving it out and uncapped for the previous images. I took about ten minutes for the shots, and it kind of dried out until I recapped it and let it stand upside down.
Yes. I’m quite glad that I bought two of the black ones at the same time. It’s just a pain in the ass getting this… I wonder if I can find someone in the US who would be willing to do care package exchanges? Sigh.
